A beautiful example of a classic wooden perpetual calendar, antique or vintage, dating from the first half of the 20th century.  Larger than usual, it is in perfect working order.

Item Description

Perpetual calendars are becoming increasingly sought-after, reminders of a simpler, bygone age.

You will have to go a long way to find a finer example of a dark wood perpetual calendar than this.  It is in amazingly good condition for an item which is probably over a century old.  The case is virtually without blemish, the rollers in perfect working order. The day and month rollers are paper, but have lost little of their original whiteness.  The date roller is in linen, taut and clean.  Each aperture is protected by glass.  All elements of the perpetual calendar are, as far as one can tell, original.  There is one possible later addition – a metal hook held by a single screw to the rear of the cap.  This was presumably to affix the calendar to a wall or panel.  See picture.  It could easily be removed, although it in no way detracts from the authenticity of the item.

This perpetual calendar measures (approx) 20cms wide by 26cms in height.  It is 9cms deep on its base, although with an item like this is feels like sacrilege to measure in metric and not imperial!  It is larger than other calendars on sale here.

Wooden perpetual calendars were especially popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their popularity continued in office settings into the 1950s and 1960s where their styling is noticeably more ‘modern’.  It is hard to date individual items accurately – they rarely carry makers’ marks or any other kind of identification, but it is safe to assume that this example dates from the 1920s or 1930s.
